What is the purpose of the sphinx according to mainstream archaeology?

• Makia: I know it’s in Egypt.  I believe it has something to do with water.  I wouldn’t build the sphinx, personally.  I would build a statue of myself.  I know the sphinx’s got the face of a person and the body of a dog.
